The Tupolev Tu-160, known by its NATO reporting name Blackjack, is a Soviet-designed supersonic strategic bomber developed during the later decades of the Cold War. Entering service in the late 1980s, it was designed to deliver long-range nuclear and conventional strike capability as part of the Soviet Union’s strategic deterrence.
With its variable-sweep wings and four powerful turbofan engines, the Tu-160 is the largest and heaviest supersonic combat aircraft ever built. Capable of speeds above Mach 2 and intercontinental range, it represents the peak of Cold War bomber design and remains a symbol of strategic air power.
