The Automatkarbin 4 (AK4) is Sweden’s license-built version of the German Heckler & Koch G3, chambered in 7.62×51 mm NATO. Sweden selected the G3 platform in the mid-1960s, and the AK4 became a standard service rifle, replacing several older small arms systems.
Although the AK4 was later replaced as the general-issue rifle by the AK5 in the mid-1980s, it has remained in service, especially within the Swedish Home Guard and in certain specialist roles.
The AK4’s long service life is closely tied to its reputation for durability and simplicity, making it an iconic part of Sweden’s Cold War and post-Cold War small-arms history.
