Sweden’s Cold War jet trainer — the aircraft that taught a generation of Swedish pilots.
The SAAB SK50 Safir was Sweden’s primary piston-engine trainer aircraft, used to train Swedish Air Force pilots from the 1950s through the 1970s. A graceful, low-wing monoplane with excellent handling characteristics, it was also exported to several nations and used in civilian aerobatics. It represents the foundation of Sweden’s world-class fighter pilot training pipeline that produced Draken and Viggen pilots.
