For over six decades, the RK 62 (Rynnäkkökivääri 62) has been the standard-issue infantry weapon of the Finnish Defence Forces, a uniquely Finnish evolution of the AK platform, refined for Nordic conditions and built to last. Designed between 1957 and 1962 by Valmet engineer Lauri Oksanen, the RK 62 draws its lineage from the Polish-licensed AK-47 but was thoroughly re-engineered for Finnish manufacturing standards and field requirements. Produced by Valmet and Sako, it chambers the 7.62×39mm Soviet intermediate cartridge, the same round that defined Cold War infantry combat worldwide.

In October 2025, the Finnish Defence Forces announced plans to replace the RK 62 with a 5.56×45mm NATO-standard rifle by the end of the decade, closing the chapter on one of the most respected service rifles in Scandinavian military history.
