MT-LB — The Soviet Workhorse That Served Every Role
Versatile, amphibious, and built to last, the MT-LB (Mnogotselevoy tyagach legky bronirovanny — “multi-purpose towing vehicle light armoured”) is one of the most widely deployed tracked armoured vehicles of the Cold War era. From artillery tractor to APC to command vehicle, the MT-LB has done it all — and it’s still doing it today. This premium 3D-printed scale model captures the utilitarian, low-profile silhouette of this Soviet workhorse in precise, display-ready detail.
Development began in the 1950s when the Soviet Central Auto and Tractor Directorate sought a successor to the AT-P artillery tractor series. The result was the MT-L, based on the PT-76 amphibious light tank chassis — and the MT-LB is its armoured evolution. Entering production in the early 1970s at the Kharkiv Tractor Plant (KhTZ) in Soviet Ukraine, it was deliberately engineered for low cost, reusing proven components including a truck-derived engine. It was also manufactured in Bulgaria and under licence in Poland by Huta Stalowa Wola, where from the mid-1990s the original YaMZ engine was replaced with a Polish 6-cylinder SW 680 diesel.
