The submarine that “sank” a US aircraft carrier and changed how NATO thinks about underwater warfare.
The HSwMS Gotland is a Swedish Gotland-class diesel-electric submarine, and arguably the most famous submarine in the world for what it did during a 2005 NATO exercise. Operating in near-silence on its Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, it repeatedly penetrated the USS Ronald Reagan carrier strike group’s defenses — “sinking” the carrier multiple times. The US Navy was so impressed they leased the Gotland for two years to train against it. A legend in modern naval history.
