The Tupolev Tu-22M, known by its NATO reporting name Backfire, was a long-range, supersonic bomber developed during the Cold War as a major evolution of the earlier Tu-22. Entering service in the early 1970s, it was designed for high-speed strike missions against both land and naval targets.
Featuring variable-sweep wings, increased range, and significantly improved performance, the Tu-22M became one of the most capable bombers in Soviet service. It played a key role in Cold War strategic planning and remains in limited service today in modernized variants.
